No, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist.

You can obtain a Medicare Mental Health Care Plan through your GP. During your appointment, your GP will do an assessment of your mental health to determine the right care options for you.
The Mental Health Care Plan allows you to subsidise the cost of some psychological therapy services for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. At this time, the medicare rebate is only available for Individual Therapy sessions.
If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, you will get a rebate of $145.29 following each of your 10 Medicare sessions per calendar year.
-
If you are attending under a mental health care plan, please ensure you provide your referral to the clinic via email prior to your appointment or ensure you bring the referral to the appointment.
The full session fee is payable at the time of your appointment. Medicare rebates are processed immediately after payment.
Following Medicare processing times, Medicare will deposit the rebate amount into your nominated Medicare bank account.

This will depend on a number of factors, including the presenting & severity of the presenting concerns.
The frequency of appointment is discussed with your psychologist and an initial plan is formulated which can be reviewed periodically. It is not uncommon for individuals to attend weekly or fortnightly appointments with bigger gaps in between scheduled appointments as therapy & treatment gains are maintained.

Therapy often shifts things quietly before it transforms them. While progress can feel subtle, many people begin to notice small and meaningful changes over time.
You might find yourself becoming a little more aware of your thoughts and emotions, pausing before reacting, or feeling more grounded in moments that once felt overwhelming.
You may start setting clearer boundaries, softening your self-talk, or making choices that align more closely with your values.
Sometimes progress shows up as a greater sense of clarity, an ability to tolerate discomfort a little longer, or simply feeling less alone with what you’re carrying.
These gentle cues are signs that something inside is shifting and that you are moving toward the life you want to build.
-
If you have private health insurance, you may be able to claim back part of your session fee. Please contact your private health fund for information on eligibility and for specific rebate amounts.
The full session fee is payable at the time of your appointment. Upon payment you will be emailed a receipt of payment which you can submit to your private health provider.
Please note: You cannot claim a private health rebate if you are already receiving a Medicare rebate for that same session. You may choose either Medicare or private health for a given session, but not both.

Our practice has a cancellation policy in place.
We require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice if you are unable to keep an appointment. This is a courtesy to the therapist and the other clients who may require care.
Appointments cancelled within 24 hours of the appointment time will be charged a cancellation fee that is equivalent to 50% of the consultation fee. Please note that this fee cannot be claimed back through Medicare.
Missed appointments where no notice has been given will be charged 100% of the consultation fee.
For late cancellations, please inform us via email to ensure that your cancellation is received promptly or via the patient portal.
-
Most businesses have a cancellation policy in place to protect the sustainability of their business. For psychologists, it makes it difficult to ensure continuity of care for all our clients. Frequent cancellations means that you might receive inconsistent care through the stopping and starting of therapy, and it delays your therapy progress.
A late cancelled appointment is also a loss to:
Another client who has been sitting on the waiting list to see the psychologist urgently, and
The psychologist who has prepared for your session, time completing administrative tasks relating to your appointment and had set the time aside for you.
